SJI International High School opened its doors in 2007, and was followed in 2008 by SJI International Elementary School. Together, they form part of a group of seven Lasallian schools in Singapore with a history dating back to 1852.

The realisation of the vision of SJI International was a labour of love for a team of SJI alumni, who, having benefitted so profoundly from their own education at Saint Joseph's Institution (SJI) – one of Singapore's oldest and most respected schools – then sought a way to offer Singaporean and expatriate children a similar life-changing experience.

We speak to Leslie Parungao, one of SJI's current operational personnel, about the school, and the school's decision to introduce EdSmart in January 2017 to digitise and streamline their school administration processes.

Can you please describe your role at SJI International?

I am the Administrative Officer for Enrichment, focussing on trips and expeditions. My key responsibilities are sending information about the trips to parents, collecting consents and payments, and helping admin staff to work with our vendors. I've been with SJI for two-and-a-half years now.

Tell us a bit about SJI International and what makes the school special?

SJI International School is an independent, co-educational Lasallian Catholic school. Though the school has a firm foundation in the Catholic faith and the tradition of the De La Salle Brothers, we welcome children from all backgrounds and faiths.

SJI is special in the way that, although we receive no government funding, we are able to award full scholarship to students coming from overseas, as well as local students. We're also able to support a few foundations like Baan Dada Children's Home in Thailand, UWS Koh Chreum School in Cambodia and Purple Community Foundation in Philippines, as well as provide weekly community service within Singapore by our students.

SJII is always focussed on helping those in need.

How were you introduced to EdSmart?

EdSmart was introduced by our Assistant Principal (Technology for Learning), Mr Lee Baker, to support the paperless programme of the school, mostly for school trips, expeditions and admissions purposes.

How do you think EdSmart tailors to international schools in particular?

As the digital world gets bigger, EdSmart helps our busy parents – especially those who travel frequently for business or for those international students whose parents are not living with them – to submit any requirements easily by just using their computer or their phones from wherever they may be.

How would you sum up EdSmart in 25 words or less?

EdSmart is an innovative system that offers our school the flexibility to meet our clients/parents needs.
